Ping

Test network connectivity.

Description

In the context of computer networking, ping is a utility that is used to test the connectivity between two devices on a network. It works by sending a small data packet, called a "ping," from one device to another, and measuring the time it takes for the ping to be returned. This can be used to determine whether the two devices are able to communicate with each other and, if so, how fast the connection is.

The term "ping" can also be used as a verb, as in "to ping a device," which means to send a ping to that device in order to test its connectivity. The term "ping" comes from the sound that sonar makes, and was chosen by the creators of the ping utility to evoke the idea of using sound waves to determine the distance to an object.

Target can be:
- hostname (ex. www.securityprogs.com)
- ipv4 address (ex. 1.1.1.1)
- ipv6 address (ex. 2606:4700:4700::1111)
Numeric output only. No attempt will be made to lookup symbolic names for host addresses.
Specifies the number of data bytes to be sent. The default is 56,
which translates into 64 ICMP data bytes when combined with the 8 bytes
of ICMP header data.
Set 'Don't Fragment' flag.
